Last spring the Washington State Legislature passed the Move Ahead Washington transportation package, which included additional funding for transit agencies that provide free rides to youth ages 18 and under. Earlier this month, the Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners approved our agency implementing this new Free Youth Transit Pass program starting September 1. All youth will be able to ride Pierce Transit for free, and young people ages 13 and older are encouraged to show either a Youth ORCA card or current high school or middle school student ID to ride.
King County Metro, Sound Transit, Kitsap Transit and Community Transit will similarly go fare-free for youths by the beginning of the school year. Transit is already free for youths in Everett.
For a few months following September 1, while Pierce Transit is transitioning to this program and working with partners on distributing cards, young people who do not have one of these items still can board for free.
