Where do you work and what is your role in the company?
Community Advocate at Tacoma Housing Authority.
How far is your commute? How long does it take you each way? If you are teleworking, how long would your commute have been if you were commuting to the office?
4.6 miles and about 30 minutes each way.
What is your commute mode and what made you decide to commute this way?
I prefer to ride my bike, and only use my car when the weather is really wet, or I have things to bring with me that cannot fit on my bike. Commuting by bicycle is a way to connect with myself before work and decompress and move my body.
What do you enjoy about your commute (or teleworking)?
My favorite part of my commute is that it includes cutting through Wright Park.
Do you have any interesting stories from your commute?
I often see other cyclists and I get to wave as we pass each other, and when I can I like to chat with other bike commuters at stop lights.
Do you think you save money by commuting this way?
Absolutely. I only spend about $50 a month on gas at most and I think that I am saving money long term because of the health benefits that are offered,
How does your company help accommodate your commute option? (ex: bike racks, free bus pass, vanpool subsidy, flexible work hours, telework incentives, etc.)
My office always makes sure that I have a secure, dry, and safe place to keep my bike during the workday.
Is there anything your company could do better to accommodate your commute option?
It's not an accommodation, but I would love to see more people in my workplace bike commuting and maybe even share my commute alongside them!
What would you say to your fellow employees to inspire them to try using a commute option other than driving alone in their car?
Bike commuting is a great way to boost your physical and mental health, it's not as challenging as you may think and there are lots of accessible back roads that help you to stay away from cars and see new areas of your city you may have not interacted with!
